The Employees State Insurance Act 1948 was implemented first in the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh (undivided) in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad on 01.05.1955. Subsequently the Act was implemented in the coastal areas of Vijayawada, Guntur, Eluru, Visakhapatnam w.e.f. 09.10.1955.

Keeping in view of the importance of decentralization a Sub-Regional Office Vijayawada was established on 28.04.2003 and the area of operation of Sub Regional Office, Vijayawada initially was  extended to 9 coastal districts viz; Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, Nellore districts.  In order to further decentralize the scheme, another Sub Regional office, Visakhapatnam was established on 02.02.2009, with the area of jurisdiction of Vishakhapatnam, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts, duly restricting the area of operation of erstwhile SRO, Vijayawada to 06 districts. 

After formation of the State of Telangana on 2nd June 2014 bifurcating the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, the Sub Regional office, Vijayawada was upgraded to Regional Office on 1st May, 2016. Also, the 04 Rayalaseema districts, which were hitherto part of RO, Telangana, were annexed to RO, Andhra Pradesh after bifurcation, as a result of which, the jurisdiction of this office was extended to all the 13 districts of the state. The Regional Office is functioning from its own building at Panchadeep Bhawan, Gunadala, Vijayawada from June, 2015. To further decentralize the scheme, Sub Regional Office, Tirupathi has been formed w.e.f. 03rd December, 2016 with the jurisdiction of 04 Rayalaseema districts, Kurnool, Cuddapah, Ananthapur, Chittoor.

The ESI Scheme was implemented fully in 09 coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh w.e.f. from 01.09.2016 and 04 districts viz; Chittoor, Kadapa, Kurnool and Ananthpur districts of Andhra Pradesh w.e.f 01.12.2016.  Hence, no area in Andhra Pradesh is left out of ESI Coverage.

The area of Yanam which is geographically part of “Pondicherry” was attached to this Region for administrative convenience as it is situated adjacent to East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh.  This centre is attached to Kakinada Branch Office.  The Dispensary at Yanam however is under the control of Pondicherry Government.

For delivery of Medical Benefit in the state of Andhra Pradesh, there are 04 ESIS Hospitals and  79 (78+1 Yanam) ESI dispensaries across the state in addition to the panel clinics appointed (117). Apart from this, ESI is having tie up with reputed private hospitals (133) for providing Secondary (98) and Super Speciality Treatment (35) to the beneficiaries.

ESI Corporation through its Regional Office administers the ESI Scheme and delivers the cash benefits to the Insured Persons through its 21 Branch Offices in the State of Andhra Pradesh.
